Happy New Year

A very Happy New Year to all readers of this blog!

This year will be very interesting, with more field reviews and behind the scenes clips. I´m also planning some “how to” videos. This might prove costly for me so I will need sponsors or I’ll have to charge for viewing and downloading these videos. We’ll wait and see what comes up.

These days I´m working hard finishing my next book about Svalbard. In this book I’ll publish some of my best shots from this arctic island and it will be written in 4 languages (English, Norwegian, German and Italian). This book will be ready for sale by April.

Pages 78 & 79 in the new book about Svalbard.

I´m also working on the English translation of my updated digital nature photography book (published in November 2008), which has been a great success in Scandinavia. This is a “How to” book of outdoor photography, which I think many of you would love to see. I hope to publish this book through Amazon in May / June.

Pages from Chapter 1 in the English version of the digital Nature Photography book

And of course I will keep using Canon equipment out in the field for some real life testing. First I have to finish my Canon 7D articles, and then move on to the 1D Mark IV, EF 17/4 TS, EF 70-200/2.8L II and other new and interesting equipment.

These are some of my plans for the next few months.

  • Happy new year :)
I am looking forward to read one of youre books, a lot of good reviews of what you have published.

  • Jeannette:

Thank you for your updates and information, I wish you a healthy and prosperous 2010.

On another note I was searching the web for prices etc on the ID Mark IV when I came upon a UK based company offering the camera at a too good to be true price. (Or is there another Canon camera with nearly the same name – note they left out the ‘Mark’). I like a good deal but offering the camera at 2000US just seems to a scam! Are there copies of Canon cameras out there? Has anybody else heard of this company? Here follows an extract of their email:

‘We are a registered company under the UK government located in AYRSHIRE.

Here is the name of our company:

TELECOMS FOR BUSINESS LTD.You can check that at wwww.ukdata.com.

the canon 1D IV cost 2000usd

the canon 1D IV are brand new from the factory sealed in the original box ,

it comes with 2 years international warranty.

we ship via UPS courier company.

we run 3days shipping to your door step.

we accept payment via WESTERN UNION MONEY TRANSFER.’

    Hi Jeannette

This is too good and you should not think about it anymore, and you should never buy from companies with Western Union. The cheapest “real” Canon 1D MarkIV i have seen is just below 5000US, at: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/656378-REG/Canon_3822B002_EOS_1D_Mark_IV.html/BI/5280/KBID/6062

  • Jeannette:

Thanks for the feed back OJL. I have deleted the emails from this company – I think they should be deleted from the web!

I am a big Canon fan and am tempted to go for the 1D MarkIV but wish it was full frame like the Nikon 3Ds.

In your experience what is the advantage of the full frame? I am looking for sharp pictures and speed.

    Regards,
    Jeannette

    Hi Jeanette

I will start testing the 1D Mark IV tomorrow, and will let you all know the results.. It might be -30 C tomorrow!
I really love the full format cameras like 1DS Mark III and 5D Mark II, and the most advantage is when using wide angle lenses.

  • Jeannette:

-30? Wrap up well! Here in southern Spain it is sunny and about 15 C (+!)

I am excited to hear your results. Yes, I would have bought the Mark II, but find it way too slow for action shots.

  • M:

When will the 7D articles be finished? I feel like I have been waiting forever for part 4!!

  • kc:

yea i’m waiting eagerly for part 4 too =) keep up the good work!

  • Luca:

Thank you for your work, I’m waiting your books, especially the “How to” book of outdoor photography.

Hallo Ole, I’m interested in your book, hope to read soon.
    I’m from Italy.
If you would like to translate in italian too, I think I can help you (or do it for you!).
It’s not my job, it’s my passion, so it would be a great (and professional) job.
I think you can read my email address, so please, let me know.
    Thanks.

Guten rutsch und alles gute für neue Jahr !

  • Angelo:

    Hello Ole,
great news about the english version of your book, I’m interested too so I hope it will be available soon!
I repost a question I asked days ago, please give me a hint: I’ll leave for Lapland (Finland) in few fays with my 7D and I wish to take the most shots I can, the main question is: how did you set up the WB on your 7D?
I know there’s a lot of snow (and a ‘cool’ weather, almost -30 right now), I’m really interested to know how to set up my 7D and your experience can help me soooo much!!!
Many thanks in advance and Happy New Year!
    Best regards

    Angelo (from Italy)

  • admin:

    Hi Angelo

If you shoot in raw-format I will recommend Auto-WB. It will usually be very correct for winter shots. Today it was -37C and I tried to adjust the WB, manually, but ended up with Auto-WB also today.

With bright snow you have to “over-expose” by maybe +1 f-stop, but you might know this already…

    Good luck in Finland!

  • Angelo:

Hi Ole, thank you for your answer!
Yes, I usually shoot in raw so I’ll follow your advice about the Auto-WB… ok for the over-expose, some people told me that but I always listen at good advices so thank you!
Can’t wait to read your next article!
    Many thanks again!!!
    Best regards

    Angelo

P.S. I’d like to speak to you regarding your book about Svalbard, how can I contact you?

  • These are tact sharp images from the Canon 7D and 70-200 2.8 IS USM L.
    Regarding this in particular:
    http://canonfieldreviews.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/MG_7484.jpg
the outlines of the bird seemed to be especially thick. what sharpening setting (in camera) was used, if any? I know on the 5D, the default is 5 and one can go as high as 7.
This think outline seemed to have disappeared when a detailed zoom in version was shown later.

wow, OJL, I can’t wait to read your books. If you would like to translate your books into Chinese or publish them in China, feel free to contact me.

  • Speed:

$5000 US for the 1d mark IV, gee. My 40d needs an upgrade but the 7d doesn’t seem to do well in low light. Sure does well in your outdoor shots. I do a lot of indoor weddings and such. That’s also where my 40d doesn’t perform well. The 40d does quite well in the Landscape photography i do. The price of the 1D suggests that the new 1ds will hit the $9000 dollar range? What are your thoughts Ole on the 1d mark IV price dropping when the new 1ds comes out?

  • admin:

    Hi Speed

I don´t think the IDS Mark IV will force the price on the 1D Mark IV to drop very much, but who knows…

  • I’d love to buy your English version of this book, can you put me on a head’s up list when it is released, much appreciated!
