Big changes!
UPDATE: (05.19.2010): New website is now published at: www.naturfokus.com Follow me on my assignmets and expeditions!!
UPDATE: (03.26.2010): I understand some of your frustration about redirecting this site, so I will listen to you and just leave it like it is now. I will instead make a link to the new nikonfieldreviews.com site. Sorry for making many of you upset and angry.
UPDATE (03.24.2010): I have removed the reasons why I left Canon, due to many negative feedbacks. I don´t want to say anything bad about Canon.
There has been less activity on this field review site in 2010. This is due in part to hard work with my Svalbard book project, photo workshops and expeditions. I have also tested some Nikon equipment in the last weeks, and here is my first report.
I had never used Nikon D3 cameras before, but after only one day I got very satisfying results (this sentence has been modified). Especially the D3S; it was extremely fast and precise, and the image quality even at ISO 2500 at sunset really shocked me.
Hawk owl in Norway. Nikon D3S with 400/2.8, 1/2500 sec, f/4 and ISO 2500.

The following weeks I did more field tests with fast moving birds, high ISO shooting and difficult light conditions. After 5000 exposures I was so happy with the image quality, sharpness and colors of my pictures from Nikon D3S and Nikon D3X, that I decided to sell all my Canon gear. This was a shocking decision for me, Canon and my photo colleagues. I´m 100% sure that this was the right decision.
Old church in Norway at midnight. Nikon D3X (exposure # 0002) with 14-24/2.8, 3 sec, f/11 and ISO 800.
Golden eagle in Norway. Nikon D3S with 600/4, 1/1250 sec, f/6,3 and ISO 500.

White-tailed sea eagle in Norway. Nikon D3S with 300/2.8, 1/80 sec, f/7,1 and ISO 200.
White-tailed sea eagle in Norway. Nikon D3S with 300/2.8, 1/160 sec, f/9 and ISO 200.

A week ago I accepted an offer from Nikon to become a Nikon Ambassador. It is strange to shift so fast from Canon to Nikon, but when I decided to sell my Canon gear it was normal to partner with Nikon. I´m now very happy to be on the Nikon team, and with in my opinion the best camera equipment on the market.
So what happens now?
First of all, I will do no more Canon field reviews and I will also soon make a link to a new site: nikonfieldreviews.com where I will do both Nikon field tests and articles about photography (not only gear). The focus will still be on image quality and how equipment functions and handles in the field.
Secondly, I will cooperate with my good friend and photographer Roy Mangersnes when building up the new nikonfieldreviews.com. I will also focus more on getting support from sponsors etc. so it’s possible to publish field reviews more often.
Finally, I want to thank all of you loyal readers for your interest in my field tests, and I hope at least that some of you will follow me over to the new site.
All the best!
OJL
Thanks to Bob Baillargeon for copy-editing!

Thansk for the info. I’m looking at making the same change and it’s been hard to get some real information.
good luck on the shift!
though i’m a canon shooter, in the end its the pictures that count. i’ll continue checking on your site as you take great images.
I don’t mind you switching systems, but I would damn sure like to know the exact reasons for it, not just a general “better equipment, but also other considerations”. If posted, it would probably be the most valuable information ever posted on this site, especially if it it well founded critique.
Hello, I am a user of Canon. And now I ask: Why moved to Nikon? Reached any conclusion that the Canon is worse than the Nikon for some reason?
I just read Ole’s review on 7D which I owned since Jan’10. I was happy knowing that my decision to add canon L series lenses was right until suddenly you and many changed to Nikon. Is that really what some people say that Canon is for the first time SLR users?
Sprøtt fine bilder!
Du har fått deg en fast leser
Nikon ftw!
Hi!
It’s been a shock to read this post. WOW! That’s probably why I’m so late in my comment. That’s also probably why I still have not taken a look at your new website…
I’m really sorry and understand your frustration, and I’m glad your switch will help you take more, better, more diverse pictures. I have a hard time imagining you taking better pictures though… I guess I’ll have to see your new site eventually.
Yesterday night a friend of mine questionned me about my 7D. He actually wanted something that provided the 5D’s full-frame quality with the 7D’s performance. I was tempted to tell him the answer was the D700…
I’m quite new to the DSLR world, and these recent times were those when entry-level Canon gear just smashed Nikon’s pro line. Then Nikon released the D3 and I could hear the HUGE relief sighs of my Nikonist relations.
I just hope Canon will provide those like me without the budget to switch with gear that will make us really proud again.
Anyway, I’m happy you’re plainly satisfied now, and wish you the best.
Ole! The “on” switch is on the top right on the Nikons, not on the back as on the Canons. Thought I could help you on your way into Nikon land
(It’s taking soooo long)
Hi,
You are a very good professional photographer and have a great potential to do certain influence in entry level people like me.
Today I use a canon body just because BH store do not send nikon bodies to Brazil. After all, i’m very happy with my body and lenses (7D, Sigma 17-70 (pearl) and 70-200 f/4 IS). A strange point is that I bought sigma two times. The first one I sold thinking “oh, it is not a canon lens and it is not a L lens so, it is not a good lens”. After the change for a expensive L lens I think… “ow shi…, spend a lot of dollars, as an amateur, and the quality gain was not impressive!”. So, start to buy the sigma again. Today I’m think more about composition. The lens investiment, IMHO, for amateurs, should be more on the telephoto side.
Thanks and good compositions for all canon users, nikon users, sigma SDXX users, olympus users and so on.
All these Nikon v. Canon barb trading is quite laughable. It’s mind-boggling: it’s like watching grown men behave like kindergarden tots. Cameras are inanimate objects, and I don’t think great photographers are great because of the specific brand of camera system they use. People who focus too much on the individual technical aspects of a Canon or a Nikon often lose sight of the fact that the photos they take are ultimately what matter, rather than who can cite the most number of reviews favoring one brand over the other. It’s insane, and I believe many of these people who get easily set off into a murderous rampage over a piece of metal really, really, really need to see a doctor. Instead of enjoying their cameras and improving their craft by actually going out to take pictures, they have decided to impress not by learning how to improve their composition and such, but by memorizing as many technical details as they can about their camera and going to various fora to defend their camera brand’s honor. Please be careful not to criticize the noise level at high iso’s of these people’s cameras; it’s possible they will decide to seriously attack or maim you physically if they believe you have seriously besmirched their camera’s honor. Once you’ve tainted their cameras, they will no longer find any reason to live. So, if you want to encounter the most number of crazies, just go to photography fora.
Hello Ole, great photos as usual!
Happy to know you’re feeling very good with the D3s, you shot great photos with the Sandwih terns and I can’t wait so see some more!
Great Reviews!
I also had the 7d.. I sold all my Canon gears just like you, and I’m very happy with the switch be it that I am currently using only a 24mm and an old 55 mm…. its gear building once again
Looking forward to your reviews on the other site
You are one of best professional photographer i’v been followed along this year. I’t doesn’t matter the gear you wear. You still give the best picture. Good luck in your new journey.
